Ratu Epenisa leads Bau delegation to present reguregu to late Ratu Epeli Ganilau

A delegation from the chiefly island of Bau led by Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, na Turaga na Vunivalu na Tui Kaba, presented their i-reguregu to the family of the late chief, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, at the  Government training centre in Suva this afternoon.

The delegation was received by Ratu Epeli’s eldest son, Ratu Penaia Kamisese Tuivanuavou Ganilau.

Ratu Epeli passed away on March 21, 2023, at the age of 71.

The traditional condolence gathering began today in Suva and tomorrow at Somosomo in Taveuni.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at the Tuvusa hall at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua before the funeral cortege will leave for Taveuni in the afternoon.

Ratu Epeli will spend the night at his chiefly residence Vuniduva on Thursday before the funeral service and burial on Friday.

The late Ratu Epeli was a Fijian military officer and politician.

He was the Commander of the then -Fiji Military Forces and Chairman of the Bose Levu Vakaturaga (Great Council of Chiefs).

He was the son of the late Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau, the first President of Fiji and was married to the late Adi Ateca Mara Ganilau, the eldest daughter of the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Fiji’s first Prime Minister.

He is survived by his two sons, two daughters and nine grandchildren.
