For first timers, Votualevu College of Nadi, the Vodafone Fiji Secondary School’s Basketball Championship at the Multipurpose Court in Lautoka was a great learning experience.

Fielding only one team in the Under-19 Boy’s division, they went down to Gospel High School with 14-21 and then lost a close encounter against Tilak High School 13-17 on Day One.

“We lost two games, but we have managed to keep the points close. We have only one game remaining against Suva Grammar School and we are looking forward to the challenge,” said coach David Tui.

He added majority players are from the school’s netball team and there were only two players in the squad who previously played basketball.

“We had one day’s training before the competition began and I really feel we can build on from here.

“Hopefully by next year, we can bring a full-fledged team all grades and actually have a chance of winning.”

Tui acknowledged the support from the teacher’s as well.

“These boy’s are the pioneers of basketball of the school and I am sure we will build on even better from next year.”
