‘Students who fail will repeat’

Year 12 students who fail their exams will have to repeat, says Ministry of Education permanent secretary Dr Anjeela Jokhan.
“The reason why we have external exams in Years 12 and 13 is so that students, based on examination results, would progress,” she said, referring to the practice in the past.
Dr Jokhan said this year, they “would be doing the same thing” where, based on examination results, Year 12 students would progress to Year 13.
“So Year 12 – normally students would sit exams, those who pass, they move to Year 13, those who don’t pass remain in Year 12.
“So it’s the same thing that happens every year, including this year.”
In September this year, Education Minister Premila Kumar said Year 1 to Year 11 students would be assessed academically to enable teachers to understand their weaknesses and improve their learning.
She said the ministry had no intention of holding children back from progressing to the next class.
Mrs Kumar said there would be four school terms next year, one for revision and the other three for the 2022 school year.
